Agronomic practices preventing local outbreaks of rice yellow mottle virus disease revealed by spatial autoregressive analysis

چکیده

Abstract Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) causes severe rice ( Oryza sativa L.) yield loss. It has been endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar since 1966. Transmission (plant community level) long-dispersal (regional continental scale) models have established but viral spread in farming communities continues, while the conditions causing local disease outbreaks remain unclear. We hypothesized that outbreaks, comprising inter-plot intra-plot aggravation, are significantly associated with individual farmers’ attributes agronomic practices. To test this hypothesis, spatial autoregressive were constructed using variables collected by visual observation farmer interviews. Field surveys conducted during four consecutive cropping seasons from 2011 2013 Lower Moshi Irrigation Scheme of Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Our detected dependence spread, not aggravation. The probability increased use IR64 cultivar (26.9%), decreased straw removal (27.8%) crop rotation (47.7%). aggravation herbicide application (24.3%) (35.4%). A simple cost-benefit analysis suggested should be mitigated replacement removal. When severity is critical, inhibited application, rotated other crops. This first study upscale model experimental field level level, obtaining through easy-to-implement techniques such as interview. successfully identified candidate practices for control RYMV. However, causal relationships between RYMV unknown, trials needed develop robust measures.

Maternal genetic effect of resistance to rice yellow mottle virus disease in rice

Reciprocal selection is a breeding procedure for population improvement and hybrid development. Both female and male parents contribute genes to their offspring, but the influence of female parent often extends beyond simple genetic transmission. Nine parents were crossed in a full diallel and evaluated for maternal genetic effects for resistance to rice yellow mottle virus disease. This study ...

Historical Contingencies Modulate the Adaptability of Rice Yellow Mottle Virus

The rymv1-2 and rymv1-3 alleles of the RYMV1 resistance to Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV), coded by an eIF(iso)4G1 gene, occur in a few cultivars of the Asiatic (Oryza sativa) and African (O. glaberrima) rice species, respectively. The most salient feature of the resistance breaking (RB) process is the converse genetic barrier to rymv1-2 and rymv1-3 resistance breakdown. This specificity is mo...

Phylogeography of Rice yellow mottle virus in Africa.

The sequences of the coat protein gene of a representative sample of 40 isolates of Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) from 11 African countries were analysed. The overall level of nucleotide diversity was high (approximately 14%). Great geographical distances between the sites where isolates were collected were consistently associated with high genetic distances. In contrast, a wide range of gene...

Distribution and Diversity of Local Strains of Rice Yellow Mottle Virus in Tanzania

Rice (Oryza sativa) is a key staple in Tanzania but its productivity is affected by disease infestation, primary among which is the rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV). Tanzania possesses high RYMV densities and several locations including the Eastern Arc Mountains provide suitable habitat fragmentation that facilitates the diversification process of the virus. However, the distribution pattern and...

Internal point mutations of the capsid modify the serotype of Rice yellow mottle virus.

Rice yellow mottle virus is classified in five major serotypes; the molecular diversity of the coat protein (CP) is well established, but the amino acids involved in the recognition by discriminant monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) remain unknown. Reconstruction of a phylogenetic tree and sequence alignment of the CP gene of a sample representative of the continental-large diversity were used to ide...
